The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Tween Love Story

In this animated journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping children and placing gold under their pillows. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be far from the hideous creature he had imagined.

An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. The fairies are said to be entitled types, prone to stealing whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and primitive, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.

Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they make for fairly bloodthirsty, though not particularly skilled, villains.

Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not old enough for the content teenagers view these days instead of popular teen sagas. If your child falls into this age group, it probably won’t to become their new all-time fave, but you could do worse.

A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
