Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Rugby team selection update

Newly reappointed head coach the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out due to injury, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-player squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

Following playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," commented the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again compete for the first-choice number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Blade, chosen to teammate Ben Murphy.

Robbie Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, but the youngster is also a leading candidate to cover for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole fresh name in the Irish forwards. The front rower has been in a couple of Leinster's three United Rugby Championship games this season and featured in Ireland A's defeat by England in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Southern province lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to deputise for Doris if the skipper fails to recover fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in the capital on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
