British Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with An additional 11 Destinations
The UK Foreign Office has included an additional eleven further destinations to its public warning roster about the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
The revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "an international surge in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol toxicity.
Only last month, the government had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, after multiple high-profile incidents including the deadly death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that as little as minimal doses of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within 12 to 48 hrs.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical often used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not designed for human consumption.
Although it is inherently formed during the creation of beverages, licensed producers lower it to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.
However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.
Government Recommendations for Tourists
Authorities representative the minister emphasized that each tourist should recognize the signs of methanol contamination.
"If you're having drinks abroad, choose trusted places and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer warned.
"If something feels off, like a hangover that's much more severe than normal or sight issues – get medical help fast."
The complete roster of destinations listed as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
