2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a detailed review into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming appears uniquely strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Honestly, this is a trend I can get behind. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
